Mining and Mineral Processing
Improving the wear resistance of crushers, screens, pumps and conveying equipment with tungsten carbide PTA/HVOF coatings, plus in-situ restoration.
In short: In mining, crushers, screens, pumps and conveyor equipment are subject to the continuous abrasive action of hard rock and ore. UMEK renews crusher parts, pump shafts and conveying equipment with tungsten carbide PTA and HVOF coatings, with the aim of reducing downtime.
Application Areas
Our Solutions for Mining
- Hardfacing of crusher parts

- Shaft and bearing surface restoration
- Wear-resistant coatings for pump parts
- Coating of conveyor screws
- Wear plates and local protective coatings
Typical Causes of Wear in Mining and Mineral Processing
High-stress abrasion
The high contact stresses generated when crushing hard rock cause material loss at the surface.
Slurry erosion
The ore-water mixture (slurry) erodes pump casings and impellers.
Impact
Heavy-mass impact in crushers carries a risk of cracking in brittle hardfacing deposits.
Which Component, Which Problem, Which Method?
| Component / equipment | Typical damage | Method considered |
|---|---|---|
| Crusher jaws and cone parts | Abrasive wear, loss of profile | Tungsten carbide hardfacing by PTA or welding |
| Screens and wear plates | Abrasive wear | Wear plate cladding, hardfacing |
| Slurry pump shafts and sleeves | Erosion, corrosion | HVOF WC-CoCr and precision grinding |
| Conveyor screws | Abrasive wear | PTA or hardfacing |
The method for each component is finalised through an engineering assessment of operating conditions, base material and damage condition. At our facility in Ankara, application and final grinding are carried out in a single workflow.

About Mining and Mineral Processing
Which hardfacing is selected for crusher parts?
Depending on the impact level and ore type, the choice is made between tungsten carbide PTA overlays and high-toughness hardfacing alloys; under heavy impact, the balance between hardness and toughness is critical.
Why do slurry pump shafts wear prematurely?
At the sealing areas on the shaft, solid particles, friction and corrosion act together. Dense carbide coatings such as HVOF WC-CoCr are widely considered for these areas. See our Why Do Pump Shafts Wear? guide for details.
Is on-site work possible without dismantling the equipment?
Our field team can carry out on-site work on certain large equipment; suitability is assessed according to the condition of the part and access conditions.
